"We have to find a common ground between the productive sector and universities in order to be able to share knowledge. We
already have some disciplines addressing sustainability, but I believe that after the Global Forum, this will be extended
to all courses."
Zaki Akel Sobrinho, director of the Applied Social Sciences department of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR)
Twenty-one initiatives for concrete action, which combine education,
business and sustainability, have emerged as a result of the Global Forum Northeast, which was held from 15 to 17 April 2009
in João Pessoa, Paraíba. The meeting is an extension of the Global Forum Latin America (GFAL), held in June
2008 in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. The Movement - The worldwide movement of the Global Forum was brought to Brazil by the Federation of Industries of Paraná
(Fiep) and Unindus, its corporate university, to cause close collaboration by education and business with a focus on sustainability.
Meetings have been held in Curitiba and São Paulo, which resulted in 38 shared ideas.
Most of the proposals are related to care of the environment and sustainable
development. They include urbanization and eco-housing development, the selective collection and disposal of garbage, the
efficiency of energy use in industry, the creation of a "Green Label" for companies operating on coastal areas, environmental
education for children, and strengthening education in all levels.
During
two days of dialogue, proposals were made by over 500 entrepreneurs, representatives of academia, public authorities, and
civil society on immediate projects and actions that could contribute to the education and sustainability.
"As a result
of all this discussion, it is obvious we need greater integration and sustainability programs within the universities that
captures the interest and experience of entrepreneurs in the process," said Ronald Fry, coordinator of the department of Organizational
Development of the Weatherhead School of Management (Case Western Reserve University) and coordinator of the forum.
"The
construction of a forum in Northeast Brazil occurs as a result of strong innovation: we are already seeing results here because
the scientific production is significant," he said.
The results of all meetings
has been organized, and will be shared in the meeting BAWB - World Global Forum, which takes place from 2 to 5 June in Cleveland,
USA. The President of the System Fiep, Rodrigo da Rocha Loures, was invited to present the Latin American experience and the
main results from the integration of academia & business in Brazil.
Integration
- Representatives from academia, the productive sector, public sector and civil society contributed to the discussions.
The chancellor of the Federal University of Paraíba, Luiz Renato Pontes, assessed the Global Forum as a unique opportunity
for the Northeast region, in particular for the sustainable development of Paraíba. "This integration is important:
the productive sector is becoming aware of the work being developed in universities, so that this union of forces produces
sustainable embryos, where sustainability is a focus," he said.
"This forum gave us the opportunity to exchange ideas,
share experiences and absorb cultures from around the Northeast region of Brazil, focusing on overcoming the global crisis
including the issue of sustainability," said Alfredo Luiz da Costa - Consultant of the Indutrel of Mossoró (RN).
According
to Victor Tavares, director of the School of Business at the University of Cape Verde, Africa, the discussions about sustainability
are just getting started in his country. "Our university is only one year old:
our reality is different because we must work with partnerships. It's very interesting to participate in discussions and learn
more adventurous experience of others," he said.
Compensation -
the Federation of Industries of the State of Paraíba and the city of João Pessoa will promote reforestation
to offset the environmental effect of 29 tons of carbon dioxide emitted during the Global Forum Northeast. (Carolina: the
Federation of Paraíba thinks that the GF event there produced 29 tons of carbon emissions; or, are they committed to
reducing this amount as a symbol of their commitment from the event?) 58 seedlings
of yellow ipe will be planted around the Cape White Station for Science, Culture & Arts, the site of the event.
