"We have to find a common ground between the productive sector and universities in order to be able to share knowledge. We
already have some disciplines addressing sustainability, but I believe that after the Global Forum, this will be extended
to all courses."
Zaki Akel Sobrinho, director of the Applied Social Sciences department of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR)
The idea behind this event is to include the theme of sustainability in business administration practices and academic syllabuses
The president of the Federation of Industries of the State
of Paraná (FIEP), Rodrigo da Rocha Loures, is participating this week, in Cleveland, in the BAWB-Global Forum 2009.
The meeting will assemble business executives of transnational companies like Ford, Cisco, Patagônia, Herman Miller,
Wal-Mart, IBM, Procter & Gamble, and Daw Chemical; academic leaders; and students to discuss ways of placing sustainability
at the heart of business administration and, especially, in syllabuses of university-level business administration courses.
The first BAWB-Global Forum also took place in Cleveland,
in 2006, an initiative that involved Case Western Reserve University; the Academy of Management, that assembles 19 thousand
business administration professors from 90 countries; and the UN Global Compact, subscribed to by more than 4 thousand businesses
and organizations committed to the cause of social-environmental responsibility, all over the world. The focus of the discussion
is on the need to change university-level business administration education.
One of the 2006 conference’s proposals was to regionalize
the movement. Since then, Fiep has organized the BAWB-Global Forum Latin America, held for the first time in Curitiba, June
18-20, 2008. The event was organized by the Industry University (UNINDUS) – Fiep’s corporate education arm –
in partnership with the School of Business Administration of São Paulo of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (EAES/FGV),
and Case Western Reserve University/Ohio.
Rocha Loures is presenting the results of discussions on
this theme held in meetings in Brazil. In addition to the main conference, the Global Forum Latin America also convenes meetings
called ‘Call for Action’ in the cities of Curitiba, São Paulo, and João Pessoa.
Book
During the Conference, Fiep’s president will launch
the English version of his book ‘Educate and Innovate in Sustainability’ with articles written to stimulate an
appreciative discussion on the mission of organizations, academia, and the general society, in favor of sustainability. The book is available at www.fiepr.org.br
