"We have to find a common ground between the productive sector and universities in order to be able to share knowledge. We
already have some disciplines addressing sustainability, but I believe that after the Global Forum, this will be extended
to all courses."
Zaki Akel Sobrinho, director of the Applied Social Sciences department of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR)
A business in the city of San Carlos, in the interior of the state of Sao Paulo, is using
starch meal and manioc as raw material for the production of packaging for the sectors of food and reforestation. It
uses methods of CBPAK Technology S / A, founded in 2002 by an industrial mechanical engineer. 35% of the shares are owned
by BNDESPar, an investment subsidiary of the National Bank of Economic and Social Development (BNDES).
According to
the director and founder-chairman of CBPAK, Claudio Rocha Bastos, the company's mission is to develop a clean technology,
where the source of raw material (manioc) is renewable. Further, the waste generated
by making the product is fully biodegradable and it captures CO2 during the growth of the plant, thus closing the cycle
of eco-sustainability.
Today, the company supplies the market with with food trays made of foamed starch (produced from manioc
starch through the process of thermal expansion). Biodegradable, they replace the conventional polystyrene tray, which
eliminates a source of pollution.

Reforestation
In the market for reforestation, CBPAK developed
a technology that uses pressed meal of cassava as raw material for the production of plastic tubes, which are small vessels
used for the planting of seeds, traditionally made of plastic. "These two markets have huge demands of consumption;
acquiring a small slice of these markets justifies the investment in the venture, with attractive financial returns," said
Bastos.
.: The case of CBPAK is one of 86 works that were presented at
the Global Forum Latin America (GFAL) in Curitiba, in June 2008. The event is a promotion of Unindus, corporate university
of Federated System of Industries of the State of Paraná (Fiep), with sponsorship of the Industry Social Service (SESI),
in partnership with the Center for Sustainability Studies of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV - EAESP) and Case Western
Reserve University (USA). The results of GFAL will be brought to World Global Forum, scheduled for 2009, in the United
States
